Leonidas Boutsikaris
Dr. Boutsikaris joined Nixon & Vanderhye in 2007. His practice involves all phases of patent preparation and prosecution, including appellate practice before the United States Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences. His primary emphasis is on electronic and electric inventions, and his technical areas of expertise include optical devices, lasers, optical waveguides, semiconductors, liquid crystal displays, communication systems, sensors, and solar cells.
Dr. Boutsikaris worked as a research scientist in the areas of Optics and Lasers for several years. From 1994 to 1997 he was a researcher and Deputy Head of the Applied Optics and Optical Information Processing Group at the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas, in Crete, Greece. He has authored over twenty scientific articles in the areas of optical holography, optical information processing and storage, optical recording, novel optoelectronic materials, microoptics, and optical communications, the articles appearing in scientific journals including, Optics Letters, Journal of the Optical Society of America, Applied Optics, Optical Engineering and Physical Review.
In 1999, Dr. Boutsikaris joined the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, where he worked as a Patent Examiner until 2007. He became Primary Examiner in 2004. While at the USPTO, Dr. Boutsikaris received outstanding performance ratings every year, and received the Bronze Medal Award for Superior Federal Service in 2005. He worked mostly in the areas of optical holography and diffraction, optical computing, optical filters, optical fibers and waveguides, optical storage and liquid crystal displays (classes 359, 385 and 369). Recognized for his expertise in the optics area, and for demonstrating comprehensive knowledge and thorough understanding of a technologically complex art he was awarded the Master’s Level status in 2004. Dr. Boutsikaris attended law school while at the USPTO.
In 2007, Dr. Boutsikaris accepted an invitation to join Nixon & Vanderhye. He is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and he is also admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. Dr. Boutsikaris is admitted to the bars of the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia, and is a member of the American Bar Association and the American Intellectual Property Law Association. Dr. Boutsikaris is admitted to the bars of the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia and is not admitted to practice in Virgina.
