Alan M. Kagen
Mr. Kagen focuses his practice on patent prosecution. Using his experience as a former Patent Examiner at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, Mr. Kagen has written and prosecuted many hundreds of patent applications in the U.S. and abroad in mechanical and electrical technologies as well as applications directed to business methods and e-commerce. Mr. Kagen has prepared opinions on the infringement and validity of specific patents. He has also successfully argued before the Patent Office Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences and provides IP portfolio analyses and valuation and counsel regarding IP acquisitions.
Mr. Kagen was listed in the Legal 500 Series publication for patent prosecution.
While pursuing his engineering degree at Tulane University, Mr. Kagen worked with engineers at the Consumer Product Safety Commission designing testing devices and performing tests on and analyses of numerous consumer products. He joined the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office as an Examiner in 1989, examining patent applications pertaining to land and motor vehicles. Mr. Kagen concurrently attended the night program at the University of Baltimore Law School, where he was the Comments and Notes Editor for the University's Intellectual Property Law Journal.
Mr. Kagen joined Nixon & Vanderhye P.C. in 1995. He is admitted to practice in Virginia and Georgia and before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the Courts of Appeals for the Fourth and Eleventh Circuits, and the District Courts for the Eastern District of Virginia and the Southern District of Georgia. He is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.
