Leonard C. Mitchard

Dr. Mitchard’s legal experience includes preparation and prosecution of patent applications, including interferences and appellate practice before the U.S. Patent Office Board of Appeals. He has worked principally in the chemical, biotechnology and mechanical areas, and has technical expertise in the areas of inorganic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, organic chemistry, including polymer chemistry, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, fungicides, and biotechnology, including methods of medical treatment, diagnostic techniques and recombinant DNA. He has assisted in several U.S. patent litigations, providing advice with respect to technical matters and points of patent law and practice.

His experience in the patent field extends over thirty five years, with four of those years being spent in British patent practice, one year in Canadian patent practice and over thirty years in the United States. Upon entering the United States in 1977, he joined the law firm of Murray and Whisenhunt where he became a partner in 1985 before joining Nixon & Vanderhye in 1988.

Dr. Mitchard is a member of the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia State Bar Associations, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, and the Patent and Trademark Institute of Canada. He is a member of the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court. He is also a Fellow of the British Chartered Institute of Patent Agents.
